Knole

“Knole House is so vast, it appears more like a medieval village than a single house. Perhaps unsurprising as records show that each successive owner made their own additions. Knole is reputed to be a 'calendar' house, with 365 rooms, 52 staircases, and seven courtyards. And it’s thought that an estate's been on the site since at least the 12th century. Thomas Bourchier, the then Archbishop of Canterbury, bought Knole in 1456 for £266 and set about expanding and restoring it. King Henry VIII also enlarged it when he took it from Archbishop Thomas Crammer in 1538. In 1566, Queen Elizabeth I gave the residence to one of her favourite cousins, Thomas Sackville, whose descendants, the Earls and Dukes of Dorset, have lived here ever since. Vita Sackville-West, the poet and novelist, was born in this ancient house. But, as a woman, could not inherit it. She even wrote about the vast mansion in her 1922 book, ‘Knole and the Sackvilles’. Her friend, novelist Virginia Woolf also based 'Orlando', her novel about a man in a woman's body, on Knole's history. Inside, state rooms are meticulously preserved and feature portraits by Gainsborough and Reynolds. Outside, the surrounding deer park remains much the same as it was 400 years ago, except for the loss of many trees in the Great Storm of 1987. Today, the house is in the care of the National Trust and Knole is recognised as a Sight of Special Scientific Interest. It is the only medieval deer park in Kent and large herds of fallow and Japanese deer still roam free. ”

“Thanks very much for your help. Gone out and got a 1Gb card and all is now loaded. One way of rating a company is the back up support and you score 10/10 .”
Graham, London

that you feel you're attending a lecture.”
Sam, Manchester
