“Middle Littleton Tithe Barn was built by John Ombersley of Evesham in around 1250. It is one of the finest and largest examples of a tithe barn being 42 metres long and 10 metres wide. Tithe barns were used for the storage of the tithe, a proportion, usually 10%, of the crop which would be given to the Church as a payment in kind towards the upkeep of the Church. The tithe was originally brought into England by St Augustine in the 7th century AD and by the 10th century it was compulsory, necessitating the building of Tithe barns to store the food. The figure of 10% comes from Deuteronomy; which says; "Set aside a tithe - a tenth of all that your fields' produce each year being the tithe of all your crops and store it in your town". ”
