“Charlecote Park is a splendid mansion set in an ancient deer park beside the River Avon. It was built in the 16th Century by Sir Thomas Lucy who came to England with William the conqueror, and it was the first of its kind in Warwickshire. The house is strongly evocative of Tudor times with its tall narrow windows and huge chimneys- Queen Elizabeth herself stayed in the house and her portrait and coat of arms are everywhere. However, what can be seen today was mostly added on during Victorian times- the imposing gatehouse is the only feature to survive from the Tudor period. The sumptuous decoration inside makes it feel more like a palace with fine works of art and furniture as well as the family’s sports museum. The landscape gardens, overlooking the river Avon, were created by Capability Brown, and offer excellent opportunities for a picturesque picnic or a wander around the maze. Looking out towards Stratford-upon-Avon, it is easy to believe the stories of a young William Shakespeare, the bard of avon, poaching deer at Charlescote Park. It is reputed that he was given a beating by Sir Thomas Lucy- in return for which Shakespeare ruthlessly mocked Sir Thomas in a satirical verse which he stuck on the landowner’s gate. This event coincides with a ten year period in which Shakespeare made a mysterious disappearance only to re-emerge years later on the London theatrical scene where he made his reputation. ”
